The Marijuana Lifer Project will be representing the Marijuana Lifers at this year’s California Democratic Convention on February 26, 27, and 28th. MLP board member Lanny Swerdlow is also the founder of the Brownie Mary Democratic Club, a group that works for cannabis reform from within the Democratic Party. Lanny generously offered to share part of the Brownie Mary Democratic Club’s booth space with the Marijuana Lifer Project, as well as a table at the club’s hospitality suite.
The Brownie Mary Club hospitality suite was THE social event of last year’s convention and we expect this year to be even bigger.
MLP board members Cheri Sicard, Mara Felsen, and Lanny Swerdlow will be staffing the booth, along with many of our fabulous longtime supporters and friends from the Brownie Mary Democratic Club including Cynthia Johnston, Yamileth Bolanos, Susan O’Leary, Marcia Blount, Norma White and more. Also joining us will be Amber Senter of Oakland’s Magnolia Wellness Collective. Magnolia was MLP’s first even cannabis community sponsor, and Amber, a talented designer, is designing the MLP logo, so we are excited she will be joining us.
The convention gives us the chance to educate a large swath of the politically active public, as well as democratic party delegates, about the issue Life Sentences for Marijuana.
This will be the 3rd California Democratic Convention in which Cheri, Lanny, Mara, and Kandice Hawes have been able to educate on this issue, and each year even these politically informed folks are shocked to learn there are actually people in the United States serving Life Sentences for nonviolent marijuana-only offenses.
One of our missions at the convention this year is to try to meet Senator Bernie Sanders. Marijuana lifer (and paraplegic) Michael Pelletier is a talented artist who has recently added portraits to his oil painting repertoire. Michael did an amazing portrait of Senator Sanders that we would love to be able to give to him, while letting him know about Michael, a man who is the poster child for the wastes and excesses of the drug war — a paraplegic in a wheelchair since the age of 11 serving a sentence of Life Without Parole for a nonviolent marijuana conspiracy offense.
If any of our supporters are in or around San Jose, we urge you come out and join us. We’d love to meet you in person!
