Southern California High Times Cannabis Cup, San Bernardino, CA, February 2016
The Marijuana Lifer Project had just “officially” come into existence during the middle of this 5-day event as our certified Articles of Incorporation from the state arrived then, but we did not need to be “official” to represent our prisoners at this massive event. This was thanks to the generosity of Kandice Hawes, director of Orange County NORML (and Marijuana Lifer Project’s secretary), and LA County NORML Women’s Alliance leader Jessica Lux, who shared their booths with us. Posters of “the guys” lined the booths perimeter, beckoning event goers to come check out what was going on.
We had a first happen, someone actually knew one of the prisoners on the posters. K-toe, a childhood friend of marijuana lifer Corvain Cooper was surprised to see his friend on our posters as he walked into the exhibit hall. We posed for photos to send to Corvain, and made plans to strategize how to best help him.
Four of MLP’s board members represented at the event: Cheri Sicard, Mitch Mandell, Kandice Hawes and Mara Felsen, with lots of help from Orange County NORML and NORML Women’s Alliance members. While it may seem like cannabis events like the High Times Cannabis Cup would be a case of “preaching to the choir,” we are continually astounded by how many people, even within the cannabis community, remain unaware the United States has people serving Life Sentences for nonviolent marijuana offenses. When it comes to this particular issue, even the “choir” needs educating.
