Marijuana Lifer Project Founder and Director Cheri Sicard got this email from Craig Cesal (a first time offender serving Life Without Parole for a nonviolent marijuana conspiracy offense) today (3-10-16), telling about what makes his day worthwhile, despite being “caged like an animal.”

Hi Cheri,

I just thought I’d relay one of those moments that make
my day worthwhile—even though I’m caged like an animal.
You can post it so maybe people can understand.

Tonight, Freddie, a 60 year old black man with very limited
reading skills, asked me to read a letter he received. It was from
a Pastor in Hammond, IN, who had been contacted by Freddie’s
son.

The short letter closed by designating Psalm 23. I read that
to Freddie as well. Then, I wrote a letter back to the Pastor for
Freddie. He was truly appreciative, and the letter from the
Pastor, and the thought that his son had thought of him, brought
a smile to his face. But real winner was me.

People often ask me why I can have a positive attitude, even
though I’m serving a life sentence, especially when many who have
career criminal histories, and more egregious crimes serve less
time. Well, it’s those efforts to help people like Freddie that make
my day worthwhile and keep me in positive spirits.

Freddie, the Pastor, and Freddie’s son made my day, because I could be a small part of making Freddie’s day.
